  1.      OPTi 82C931 Audio Device Driver for OS/2 Warp 3 and Merlin 4.0
  2.                           Version 1.02  Release

  5.      This is the OPTi 82c931 audio driver release for IBM OS/2 Warp 3
  6.      and Merlin 4.0. Throughout this readme file, 931 refers to OPTi
  7.      82c931 LC, AD, Vandetta and MB versions. Please note that only 931
  8.      AD version supports CD-ROM. All CD-ROM installation descriptions
  9.      below applies only to 931 AD version.
  10.  
  11.      The OPTi 931 driver supports both OS/2 3.00 and OS/2 Merlin 4.0. 
  12.      Before you install OPTi 931 Device Driver make sure that you have
  13.      installed OS/2 WARP Version 3.00 Revision 8.162 or later.  
  14.      Enter "VER /R" from an OS/2 command prompt to verify. 
  15.  
  16.      This document describes the means for setting up your Sound Card for
  17.      proper operation under the OS/2 operating system environment. Before
  18.      installing, please read PART 0 What's new in this release. If you
  19.      already have OS/2 installed, please read PART 1; if not, please
  20.      proceed to PART 2 of this document. PART 3 of this document describes
  21.      how to connect your existing or new IDE CD-ROM drive to your Sound Card.
  22.      PART 4 describes the parameter options for the Sound Card setup program
  23.      INIT931.SYS. PART 5 describes how to reconfigure your Sound Card settings
  24.      at a later time. PART 6 describes WIN-OS/2 installation. PART 7 lists some
  25.      known problems detected with this current release; and PART 8 describes a 
  26.      brief trouble-shooting session for problems that may be encountered during 
  27.      and after the installation of the Sound Card device driver.

  54.         1. New support for Merlin:
  55.            - Retreives sound card PNP resources from OS/2 PNP resource manager

  64. PART 1 - OS/2 already installed
  65.  
  66.         Installing the Sound Card device driver:
  67.  
  68.         1. Ensure that your Sound Card has been properly installed and power
  69.            on your system and wait for the OS/2 Desktop to appear.
  70.         
  71.         2. From your OS/2 Desktop, open (double click) the OS/2 System folder
  72.            and then open the Command Prompts folder.
  73.  
  74.         3. Open either the OS/2 Window icon or the OS/2 Full Screen icon to
  75.            start an OS/2 command prompt session.
  76.  
  77.         4. If you want to install the sound card as the primary sound card,
  78.            or if you are not sure, continue to read this step. Otherwise, 
  79.            go to step 5.
  80.                 
  81.            OS/2 is capable to support multiple sound cards. If a previous 
  82.            setup for a sound card other than OPTi 82c931 is not removed from 
  83.            the system, the OPTi 82c931 can only be installed as a secondary
  84.            sound card even if the first sound card is not physically in the 
  85.            system. A secondary sound card doesn't plays system sound and it
  86.            doesn't support OS/2 Voice-type application in Merlin.
  87.  
  88.            To check if a setup for a primary sound card other than the OPTi
  89.            82c931 exists, go to directory \MMOS2 in the boot drive. 
  90.            Use a editor to open the file MMPM2.INI. For example:
  91.                 CD \MMOS2
  92.                 E MMPM2.INI
  93.            Check in the [Drivers] section. The lines 
  94.                 Waveaudio=....
  95.                 Ampmix= ....
  96.                 Sequencer=....
  97.            exists if a setup of sound card exists.
  98.                 
  99.            If these lines don't exist, then exit the editor and goto step 5.
  100.  
  101.            If these lines exists and they don't look like the following:
  102.                 Waveaudio=IBMWaveOPAudio01
  103.                 Ampmix=IBMAmpMixOPAudio01,IBMAmpMixOPLAudio01
  104.                 Sequencer=IBMSEQOPLAudio01
  105.            then, a primary sound card setup other than the OPTi 82c931 exists.
  106.            
  107.            You may choose to remove the previous sound card setup by deleting
  108.            the lines:
  109.                 Waveaudio=....
  110.                 Ampmix= ....
  111.                 Sequencer=....
  112.            Save the file and then exit the editor. The installation that 
  113.            follows will setup the OPTi 82c931 as the primary sound card.
  114.  
  115.         5. Insert device driver diskette into your floppy disk drive.
  116.         
  117.         6. Type "A:MINSTALL" and ENTER.
  118.         
  119.         7. MINSTALL will display 3 options to install - OPTi WAVE OS/2
  120.            Driver, OPTi OPL3 Driver and OPTi WIN-OS/2 Audio Driver. Select
  121.            the options and click "OK". Follows the instruction to complete
  122.            the installation.
  123.         
  124.         8. Type "EXIT" and ENTER to return to OS/2 Desktop.
  125.              
  126.         9. Reboot OS/2.

  129. PART 2  - OS/2 not installed
  130.  
  131.         OS/2 Diskette Installation:
  132.  
  133.         1. Install OS/2 and proceed to PART 1 to complete the installation of device driver
  134.         for your Sound Card.
  135.

  137.         OS/2 CD-ROM Installation:
  138.  
  139.         If you intend to connect a CD-ROM to the CD-ROM interface of your
  140.         sound card and use it for your OS/2 installation, please follow
  141.         the steps below. If not, install your CD-ROM with the interface card
  142.         supplied by your CD-ROM manufacturer and proceed to install OS/2 Warp,
  143.         after your installation, proceed to PART 1 of this document to
  144.         complete the device driver for your Sound Card.
  145.  
  146.         1. In the OS/2 Warp CD-ROM installation package, you will find two (2)
  147.            "kicker" diskettes - a) Installation Diskette for CD-ROM, and
  148.                                 b) Diskette for CD-ROM (Disk 1).
  149.  
  150.         2. Copy the program INIT931.SYS located in your Sound Card device driver
  151.            diskette to the OS/2 Warp "kicker" diskette labeled "Diskette for
  152.            CD-ROM (Disk 1)".
  153.  
  154.         3. EDIT config.sys to add the following line immediately before the
  155.            LIBPATH= statement:
  156.  
  157.         BASEDEV=INIT931.SYS CDTYPE:I CDBASE:376 CDIRQ:15
  158.  
  159.         4. Install OS/2 Warp (be sure to install multimedia software support)
  160.           ************************* note *****************************
  161.               * The OPTi 931 Audio card may be detected by OS/2 install  *
  162.               * as a SB Pro - Remove this by clicking on Multimedia from *
  163.               * the System Configuration menu and select remove from the *
  164.               * Device Selections and Settings menu.             *

  167.     5. Follow OPTi 931 Audio Device Driver for OS/2 Procedure part 1 above.

  171. PART 3 - CD-ROM Drive Interface (Note: This only applies to OPTi 931's AD version)
  172.  
  173.         Interfacing a CD-ROM drive to your Sound Card:
  174.  
  175.         To interface/connect your new or existing CD-ROM drive to your
  176.         sound card, please follow the simple steps below.
  177.  
  178.         If you are interfacing an existing CD-ROM drive to your sound card,
  179.         you only need to follow steps 1 and 2 below since you should already
  180.         have your existing CD-ROM driver setup in your CONFIG.SYS file.
  181.         However, if your are interfacing a new CD-ROM drive, you will need
  182.         to follow all 3 steps below; in which case, it is recommended that
  183.         your perform step 1 first.

  186.         1. Hardware setup
  187.  
  188.            To connect your CD-ROM drive to your sound card, you will need
  189.            to setup the correct data connector cable from your CD-ROM to
  190.            your sound card. Please refer to your sound card installation
  191.            manual for more details.
  192.

  194.         2. Modifying/Setting the INIT931.SYS setup program
  195.  
  196.            To interface your new or existing CD-ROM drive to your Sound Card,
  197.            use an editor to open the CONFIG.SYS file for editing and locate
  198.            the line "BASEDEV=INIT931.SYS..."  This line should be at the first
  199.            line of the file. Insert the following "CDTYPE:" option into the
  200.            line and when completed, it should read:
  201.  
  202.            BASEDEV=INIT931.SYS CDTYPE:X CDBASE:XXX CDIRQ:X
  203.  
  204.            where <model> is the CD-ROM model denoted by the following characters:
  205.                        I       - stands for IDE (secondary)
  206.  
  207.            For example, the following enables the interface for a SONY IDE CD-ROM.
  208.  
  209.            BASEDEV=INIT931.SYS CDTYPE:I CDBASE:376 
  210.  
  211.            If the above INIT931.SYS line is not located, proceed to PART 1 of
  212.            this document for details on installing the Sound Card setup program.
  213.  
  214.            Save the file and proceed to install the CD-ROM driver if needed.

  217.         3. Installing the CD-ROM driver
  218.  
  219.            Open the Selective Install program located in the System Setup
  220.            folder and click on the icon next to the "CD-ROM Device Support"
  221.            entry.  A window with the list of OS/2 supported CD-ROM drivers
  222.            will appear. Select (click on) the CD-ROM driver name belonging
  223.            to your CD-ROM model and click on OK to confirm. Click on OK to
  224.            start your CD-ROM driver installation.
  225.  
  226.            If you have already successfully connected your CD-ROM drive
  227.            to your sound card as detailed in your installation manual, you
  228.            may shut down OS/2 and reboot your system for the changes to
  229.            take effect. If not, please proceed to connect your CD-ROM drive
  230.            to your sound card after shutting down OS/2 and switching off
  231.            your system.

  235.            Only IDE CD-ROM drive models are supported by your Sound Card.
  236.

  238. PART 4 - Options for INIT931.SYS Sound Card Setup Program
  239.  
  240.         The options for INIT931.sys are different under Warp 3 and Merlin.
  241.         
  242.         The following lists the available options for the INIT931.SYS
  243.         sound card setup program under Warp 3:
  244.  
  245.           MODE:   wss, sb            (default Windows Sound System)
  246.           BASE:   220, 240           (for Sound Blaster mode, default 220)
  247.                   534, E84, F44, 608 (for Windows Sound System mode, default 534)
  248.           
  249.           CDTYPE: None, IDE (default None)
  250.                   One character is adequate (e.g. CDTYPE:N CDTYPE:I)
  251.           
  252.           CDBASE: None, 376
  253.                   IDE       - 376      (fixed)
  254.           
  255.           CDIRQ:  None, 15
  256.                   IDE       - 15 (fixed)
  257.           
  258.           SBIRQ:  5, 7, 10, 11 (default 7)
  259.           SBDMA:  1, 2, 3 (default 1)
  260.           
  261.           WSSIRQ: 7, 9, 10, 11
  262.           WSSDMA: 0, 1, 3 (default 1)

  264.                   NOTE: The WSS IRQ and DMA are specified here
  265.                         The audio PDD will query INIT931.SYS to 
  266.                         learn of the device settings.
  267.         
  268.           GAMEPORT: 0,200,201,202,203,204,205,206,207  (0 disabled)
  269.         
  270.         Under Merlin 4.0. There's no options for INIT931.sys. INIT931.SYS
  271.         directly queries Merlin PNP resource Manager to retreive all device
  272.         resources.

  274. PART 5 - How to Reconfig the Hardware Settings
  275.  
  276.         
  277.         Under Warp 3. Type "c:\sound931\minstall" and enter, then follow the
  278.         directions from Part 1, step 8.  Directory "SOUND931" was created in 
  279.         root directoy during the first installation process.  It contains the 
  280.         same files as the installation disk.
  281.         
  282.         Under Merlin 4.0. PNP resources are used so there is no need to 
  283.         reconfig the hardware settings.
  284.  
  285. PART 6 - WIN-OS/2 support 
  286.  
  287.          Run MINSTALL and select OPTi WIN-OS/2 Audio Driver to install for
  288.          WIN-OS/2 support.
  289.          Before starting a WIN-OS/2 session, be sure to close all OS/2 Audio
  290.          applications.

  292. PART 7 - Known Problems
  293.        
  294. PART 8 - Brief Trouble-Shooting Session
  295.  
  296.         Problem:  OS/2 cannot detect your sound card and/or CD-ROM
  297.         Solution: Ensure that the BASEDEV=INIT931.SYS... line is located  
  298.                   immediately before the LIBPATH= statement:
  299.  
  300.         Problem:  No startup sound when starting OS/2
  301.         Solution: Check if System Sound is enabled
  302.  
  303.         Problem:  Sounds keep repeating
  304.         Solution: This is due to an interrupt conflict on your system. To
  305.                   use a different interrupt selection, open the CONFIG.SYS
  306.                   file for editing and change the SBIRQ option in the
  307.                   INIT931.SYS line to a different interrupt. 
  308.  
  309.         Problem:  DOS games do not work under OS/2 DOS session
  310.         Solution: Run OS/2 Add Programs located in the System Setup folder
  311.                   to ask OS/2 to add the set of DOS games on your system.
  312.                   This allows OS/2 to setup the DOS session settings best
  313.                   suited for your individual games such as DOOM.
  314.  
  315.                   If the DOS game still does not run, this may be due to
  316.                   the incompatibility of the game with OS/2. Consult the
  317.                   OS/2 newsgroup - comp.os.os2.games on the internet for
  318.                   FAQs relating to this subject, or the FTP site -
  319.                   hobbes.nmsu.edu.
  320.  
  321.         Problem:  IDE CD-ROM does not work
  322.         Solution: Ensure that the IDE CD-ROM jumper is closed on your sound
  323.                   card. Consult your sound card manual for details.
  324.         
  325.         Problem:  Compact Disc player does not generate sound.
  326.         Solution: Go to Digital Audio. Under OPTIONS, select Monitor input.
  327.         
  328.         Problem:  MINSTALL did not add the "BASEDEV=INIT931.SYS.." statement
  329.                   to config.sys.
  330.         Solution: Reduce the length "LIBPATH=.." statement in config.sys to
  331.                   255 characters or less.
  332.  
  333.
